me@MTV: Justin Davis on covering gaming's least glamorous beat: "They say, 'I feel sorry for you'." ; plus Crackdown creator David Jones on the lack of female super-cops

People pitch me cell phone gaming story ideas all the time. Well I should use the term "ideas" loosely, since most p.r. people still think that the beginning and end of a pitch to me should just be a description of their game. OK, but what's the story?
Underwhelmed as I typically am with cell phone gaming and yet certain that there should be some good stories on that beat somewhere, I thought I'd give
Modojo reporter
Justin Davis a call. Maybe there'd be a story in profiling him.
See, Justin Davis is quite the unusual gaming reporter. He's in his early 20s; he covers cell phone games; and he claims to like it. Read my profile of Davis today at
MTVNews.com and tell me if you believe him. He says: "Only by being forced to play these games I realized it's not that bad."
Oh, come on! Really?
So I asked him to name me the classics of cell phone gaming. He stalled. He dodged. But he came through. You can see his picks at the link above and read more about the abuse he takes trying to convince hardcore gaming that mobile gaming is kind of cool.
PLUS: At the bottom of said article I've got the normal extra news tidbits that go into every Tuesday column I write. This week's include a bonus bit of reporting that I didn't fit into
yesterday's "Crackdown" story. While interviewing the game's creator,
David Jones, last week I recalled some of his developers promising that the game would include a female agent. I thought that was cool because, as best I can tell, that would be the first time players could play as a woman in an open-world game. Since I've long hoped for a
"Grand Theft Auto" game that stars a woman, just to see how it affects views on gaming media violence (and romance, since we're talking about "GTA" here). Anyway Jones said the idea was cut and explains at the bottom of the Justin Davis story why.
