It's a bit odd that some of the best writing in video games appears in Nintendo's colorful kid-friendly titles. There's been plenty of great writing in all-ages literature, but debates about the quality of writing in games usually involve more serious fare, like "BioShock" or "Gears of War". Nevertheless, I always find my chats with Nintendo of America's writing team edifying.

On Monday I spoke with Erik Peterson and Nate Bihldorff of NOA about "Super Paper Mario." We talked about how and why the game makes fun of gaming nerds (and how the guys knew which "weak points" to hit), why it's so liberating to break the fourth wall (as "Super Paper Mario" does more explicitly than any Nintendo game before it), and why they wish they handled the DS Lite oven/connectivity scene differently.

Oh, and I try a joke about Birdo out on both of them. Only one of them gets it. Do you?
