MTV Multiplayer: How "The Marriage" Affected My Wedding Plans And Taught Me Fear

I'm getting married soon. So earlier this week I was more interested than I otherwise would have been to play EA designer Rod Humble's computer game "The Marriage." Now I'm wondering if it should be required for all couples on the verge of their big day. From my Tuesday MTV Multiplayer entry:

I've been in the midst of wedding planning with my girlfriend for several months. I've dealt with flower details and parental concerns. I've dwelled on music and invitation lists. I've listened to suggestions from all sorts of friends who warn about this or that pitfall. None of it has really stressed me out. But this game and my performance at it has injected a little bit of pessimism into the process.

The game has been criticized for how it defines the gendered needs of a straight couple. It doesn't just suggest that men and women have different needs, but that efforts to bring a drifting-apart husband and wife have deleterious effects on one (guess who?) more than the other.

Click the link above to see how I interpreted it, and by all means, try the game out yourself. It's certainly as worthy of discussion as "God of War II".
