MTV Multiplayer: If "Puzzle Quest" Is Hardcore Gaming Gone Pop, Should I Tune It Out?

Is there a place in the hardcore gamer's life for games that make us feel like our mothers?

So I wondered in yesterday's MTV Multiplayer item on "Puzzle Quest". Here's the quandary a "Bejeweled"-"Final Fantasy" poses me, as presented in my article:

Isn't "Bejeweled" a game for people with simple gaming tastes? Isn't it a game for moms? Shouldn't I be playing more complex stuff?

What I sense I'm experiencing is a conflict between my perceived refined gamer self and the reality of a pop-friendly style of game I had previously avoided. It's kind of like being a music snob and then having a favorite band cover a catchy pop song. Should I resist or accept?

I'm known to over-think a thing or two. I may be doing that again. Maybe I'm not.

How's that for a sophisticated conclusion?

It's funny, I've never really thought about games that way. I've always been kind of an elitist prick about music (that's what four years in college radio will get ya), but for me a game of Tetris or Bejeweled or Lumines or whatever is like a little palate-cleanser, something to pick up when you don't feel like level grinding or getting into anything too intense.

Puzzle Quest had me hooked something fierce for about three or four weeks - it was a round-the-clock fixation, and I definitely had the bizarre urge to line up real-world objects. That was a weird side effect, but like you say in the article, that happens with quite a few games, and I'm usually able to shake it off after a half hour or so.

As far as the game itself goes, I was kind of shocked that the Bejeweled format worked so well as a form of turn-based combat. There's a healthy amount of strategy involved, and while it may not be displacing Disgaea any time soon, it's definitely one of my favorite DS titles so far.
