Game Diary - May 13, 2009: Podcast Relief

Filed under: Totilo Game Diary — stephentotilo @ 9:00 am

I don’t think I’ve been caught up with the video game podcasts I listen to since 2009 began. I fantasize that one day I’ll live in a world of gaming podcasts that don’t exceed an hour.

I’m two shows behind on the Joystiq podcast (I did, at least, hear the episode during which I was killed off). I’m two behind on 1Up’s Listen Up (shorter shows, please!). And I am at least 10 shows behind on the Giant Bombcast, which stars Jeff Gerstmann and the rest of the Giant Bomb team. Thankfully, Jeff told me earlier this week that I am allowed to skip to the current shows.

I’ll feel guilty if I skip those Bombcasts. And I’ll feel like I’m missing out. But I think I must skip.

Just don’t expect me to skip the Jim Lehrer News Hour podcast as well. That thing’s indispensible!

  1. I only listen to the Bombcast and the Australian Gamer podcast.
I used to listen to 1up Yours! until the UGO debacle around new years.
Anyone got any recommendations for podcasts, gaming or otherwise? I have an hour drive either way to uni and I need some listenins.

  2. Next time you talk to Jeff G. ask him why they never talk about the Giantbombvideo-game-wiki-pedia. I think that is the best-most-unique thing on that site and they never talk about it on the podcast. It is like they treat it as some sort of embarrassing appendage. I would think it would be great if they would dredge up an interesting article or game from the archives and read it or discuss it.

  3. @ozroller If you like 1UP Yours, definitely check out Listen UP, the show is almost exactly the same. Also, A Life Well Wasted is EXCELLENT if you haven’t already checked that out. Only problem is that it’s less frequent as new episodes are usually a month apart.
Mobcast just started last week from some of the ex-EGM guys over at, they’re taking a different route than the usual gaming podcast where everyone talks about what they’re playing.

  4. I recently started working my way through the Brainy Gamer podcasts. I haven’t really been much of a podcast listener in the past, but now that I’m starting I really think that the medium is a great one for interviews but is fairly inefficient for many other purposes. If you’ve got a lot of exercise or driving time or something it’s better than text, otherwise not so much.

That said, while I like interviews, as you add more people you often end up diluting the content. I’m playing around some with Out of Game, which has good content and is getting tighter, but I did skim some during the sections that were more like bull sessions.

  5. I, more or less, gave up on podcasts due to the ridiculous amount of RSS feeds I have. I cannot even keep up with THAT stuff, much less audio versions of the same topics.

  6. The only podcast I listen to now a days is the Bombcast.. I too am quite sad that I dont get the time to hear it religiously. But whenever I listen, its awesome. The thing with podcasts is that they’re like simpsons episodes.. no problem if you miss any one, theres least bit of a “continuity” type of thing going on. I wouldnt want a 2h Podcast to end with a “To be continued” lol.

@Chris They mention it almost everywhere, videos and podcasts. They talk about the developer pages, character pages, everything , also they do the community highlight type thing which has some wiki stuff too. Dont know how you got that feeling.

@Gohan haha, have a similar feeling, me too. but sometimes, you want to hear the opinion of people, whose you know is pretty interesting. Also, some podcasts are like those daily night shows, its just them recapping the news, but in a funnier, more interesting manner :D Thats basically why I hear bombcast whenever I get the chance. Also, when you go out etc, rather than reading a huge RSS lag, its better to listen to a podcast.
