Game Diary - June 8, 2009: Still Figuring This Out

Filed under: Totilo Game Diary — stephentotilo @ 8:00 am

While I was at MTV, I managed to write my game diary every weekday for a year with almost no exception. But since joining Kotaku, as you’ve probably noticed, I’ve had trouble keeping this diary daily. It’s barely been weekly! What’s the solution? I’m not sure, but I’m open to ideas…

P.S. I finished my new Favorite Game of 2008 yesterday (guess!). Just a couple more ‘08 games to go before I can say for certain which one I liked best. Valkyria Chronicles is now in rotation in my PS3.

  1. no suggestions, just wanted to throw my name behind a campaign to get you to do the diaries regularly again, it used to be a highlight of the day for my ridiculously boring work day

  2. How about setting aside twenty minutes every morning to a post. Twenty minutes when you first wake up or get to work where you can reflect on what you’ve been playing, plan to play, games in general, or whatever else you have on your mind. If after twenty minutes you still have a blank screen just chalk it up to fate, post “I’ve got nothing folks for today,” and try again tomorrow. But keep to a schedule: twenty (or ten or thirty, the time is irrelevant) minutes every (week)day. Seems to be the secret of many a successful writer.

  3. Glad to find your blog Stephen! Hope to see more insights here as well from your regular routine at Kotaku.

P.S. You need a makeover here.

  4. Is there a way to follow just your posts on Kotaku? Nothing against Kotaku, I just can’t handle to post volume over there.

  5. Here is the solution: ignore Twitter and pay attention to your site instead. ;)

Other solution: Let Twitter consume you and microblog your GD.

  6. Thanks for all the advice, folks. It’s a little more complex than you realize, as it is hard to justify blogging about games for free in the morning when I need to get my work day started, which, naturally, involved blogging about games for pay.

Ryan, try this as an RSS feed: http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=kI9j05JA3hGuMJ1j0z6skA&_render=rss … Or just click on my byline at Kotaku and bookmark the page that shows up. Either way, you can read just my work.

  7. Totally makes sense, although maybe you could pitch it as an idea for kotaku as a regular feature. Maybe if you changed it to a weekly diary where all the kotakuites* do a paragraph each, I know I’d be interested.

*no idea what job title wud make sense, are you all editors?

  8. So, did we ever find out what your favorite game of 2008 was?

I, for one, refuse to guess.
